Well, my friend it is most likely....GRIP AIDS....
Most people cannot and will not naturally stick to the pole and therefore need some help. This is where grip aids come into play. Naturally the pole is a bit slippery and then we add in our own personal sweat and effort and it becomes even more slippery. We do use cleaning alcohol and cloths to wipe down the pole to help clean the poles and remove sweat and other fun things...but usually that is not enough to make you stick.
There are also different types of poles which can be more or less sticky. At Strong Souls we have 45 mm Stainless Steel poles. Chrome & Brass tends to bother some people with metal allergies which is why we chose stainless steel. We can get into the types of poles in another post.
I wanted to share with you some popular grip aids as well as my personal favorite.
My personal favorite - Dry Hands
I do have to go easy on this stuff as it will dry out my hands and cause calluses faster. But it does tend to last the longest for me and I do feel really secure with it.
I have heard so many good things about - Monkey Grip.
There are several different types depending on what your hands tend to be...dry, classic, etc. I personally haven't tried it, but when I'm up for new grip I definitely will.
I like this one if I just need some help on my fingers and not the actual palms. It is very tacky like glue. Grip It
iTac is what my first instructor used. I loved it as a beginner but did replace it with Gripzilla Liquid because I felt it helped keep my hands dryer since pole dancing tends to increase my hand sweat. I shy away from this because of the literal mess it makes when you open and close the container. Also, it is white so it shows on your hands or anywhere else you place it.
The OG...Barbasol Shaving Cream - (The plain, smelly kind...not your favorite scent) This is great for adding some tackiness behind your knee pits. Perfect to help with leg hangs.
PS - Don't be like me...by the small bottle from the travel section in Walmart or Target....Don't carry the entire large bottle around in your bag...
The best thing for finding the best grip for you is to try a few. I have shared my grip with so many pole besties in classes to help them see if they like this grip over that grip. Share with friends whatever you buy and use some of theirs in exchanged. Honestly, I keep them all in my bag even if I don't feel like they work right for me as a just in case maybe I want to change it up or someone needs some.
Also, over time your grip strength will improve, and you will find yourself needing less and less grip aids...But as you progress your practice, you also will likely be trying harder moves. It is okay to have a little assistance to help you along the way...If it wasn't, they wouldn't be allowed in actual pole competitions like Pole Sport Organization.
Is your favorite on this list? If not, what is it?
Don't forget to book a class below if you are ready to start or continue your pole fitness & dance journey.
