If you are new to pole, I feel like this is one of the first freakout moments other than OMG I'm actually taking a pole class... What the heck do I wear? I don't want to be over or under dressed. I don't want to stick out as a complete newbie. What if they judge me? What if I wear the wrong thing?
First off, the pole community is very supportive and inclusive. Every studio that I have been to has been so accepting of everyone no matter the size, gender, race, age, etc. Which is one of the many things I love about the community.
There are several types of pole classes, but they really do all fall within two categories... Tricks or Dance. And sometimes a combo of both....
Tricks based Class
You need skin contact to do most tricks. The more the better. You also need to feel comfortable in what you are wearing. If you are so self-conscious the whole class, you won't truly be able to focus and enjoy learning the tricks. So, keep that in mind...but also test your boundaries a bit and ease into less...
My personal preference for a tricks class is booty shorts and a tank top or shirt that I can strip down to my sports bra if needed.
I've seen all sorts of outfits for trick classes based on that own person's comfort level...Some have worn string bikinis (strings can get in the way), bikini bottoms, athletic shorts, tank tops, sports bras, bikini tops, etc. I have seen girls come in jogger shorts, but I will warn you that you often need the thigh meat for grip, so they have had to roll those up to effectively continue their class. For the girls that tend to wear skimpier outfits, most wear nipple covers just in case of an accidental flash.
Dance based Class
These are my personal favorite classes. Honestly, anything tends to be okay for these classes. I've seen girls in full romper outfits, and I've seen girls in stringy thong bodysuits. Anything goes usually. Most times you will want kneepads especially if there will be floorwork involved. The floor can be really uncomfortable on your knees after a while, and it is nice to not have to worry about pain while enjoying your dance class. Plus no one wants to explain knee bruises to anyone.
You also have the option to wear heels in most dance-based classes. My personal favorites are Pleaser heels. If you do not own any heels or do not feel comfortable in them, most times you can get away with wearing socks in a class because they will also allow you to glide similar to heels.
My normal go to for a dance class is either a shorter skort or a pair of fitted yoga pants. I usually wear a normal tank top or lace bralette. I always have my knee pads. (I prefer Queen brand) and always, always have my stilettos. (Personal preference is Pleasers). Another popular stiletto brand is Hella Heels.
Please reach out if you have any questions or need help figuring out what to wear to your first class. I promise we will accept you. We might even tell you that your butt looks amazing in those. Let's go!
Don't forget to book your class!
